NAFPLION HISTORY & SIGHTSEEING

Nafplio (or Nafplion, Nauplie, Nauplio, Napli, Anapli )

Nafplio is a romantic town often called the "city of love" and also one of the most popular destinations for classic students, weekenders all year round and summer holidays. With its magical atmosphere and wealth of things to do combine with its close proximity to the archaeological sites that the Argolida is famous for of Mycenae and the Ancient Theatre of Epidavros, Nafplion is an attractive destination for most.

Nafplion, the first capital of Greece after it was freed from the Turkish occupation, played a remarkable role in Greek history which is reflected in the architecture, historical monuments, castles and museums of the old town. Syntagma Square, just a few metres away from Atheaton in the old town is picturesque with narrow streets lined with cafes, bars, gift shops and Venetian style overhanging balconies. Visit the Greek Parliament and the church of St. Spyridon where Kapodistrias was murdered. The harbor is a hive of activity and the cafeterias are "the place to be" to watch the comings and goings of the sailing boats and people strolling along the promenade.

There are two local beaches, Karathona and Arvanitia, which are well organized and popular with locals and tourists. Arvanitia is found within walking distance from Atheaton and is known as the "town beach" and Karathona is found just 1.5km away and has plenty of cafe/bars, sun loungers and water sports.

Visit the museums - the Archaeological museum, the Folklore museum, the Military museum, the Kompoloi museum and the Ouzo museum which is housed in the local ouzo distillery. Visit the castles of Palamidi high on the hill towering above the town, the Bourtzi Island in the harbor and the castle of Acronafplia. Nafplion is also home to a number of art galleries including a part of the famous National Art Gallery of Athens.

The area of New Kios, just a couple of minutes away from the town, is a protected area for some types of rare birds and also for the particular type of sand which is very beneficial for skin complaints, healing where medications are ineffective.

Whether passing through for a short stay in Nafplio or thinking about your summer holidays in Greece, Atheaton is a great choice as its location makes all of the Peloponnese easily accessible for exploring!

Nafplion is a place that will stay in the hearts of those that visit and most visitors return many many times! Nafplio "the Magical City of Love» once visited never forgotten!
